Eyes, Ears and Knows
I may have given the impression that my life growing up was a living hell ... not really .. remember most of the strife came from who I was and how I accepted or didn't accept what went on around me. I always had clothes .. I always was well fed .. and I had a roof over my head .. a lot more than a lot of folks in Saint John could say in the North and South Ends and the West Side.
So let me give you the good things .. good things that were good on their own .. not because everything else was so bad they were good .. but just plain good on their own .. between my birth and my 20th birthday.
The guitar I talked about .. the Sears one .. that was a damn good thing ... a guitar has accompanied me through life since then and has been a good friend ...
Reading was a great thing ... I have always enjoyed reading and learning since I was able to ... and I still do .. the best book I ever read? .. Godel, Escher, Bach .. not for everyone ... but we knew that by now didn't we?
Movies were awesome ... I would hop on the city bus and end up at The Strand or the Paramount ... and just simply disappear into them ... it coild have been the worst movie ever made .. it didn't matter .. it was the big screen .. the popcorn ... the huge sound ... and this great big monstrous dark room ... that only allowed light from the projector to enter ... my favorite movie of all time ... Lawrence of Arabia .. I too dreamed with my eyes wide open .. followed by The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly and Once Upon A Time in the West ...
Music ... was my life .. meaning vinyl .. I knew who played on what cut .. who the songwriters were .. who the producers were .. which recording studio was used .. it was important .. at times it was the only thing that mattered ... the greatest album of all time? .. Revolver - The Beatles ... then Rubber Soul and Sgt. Pepper ... we already know my desert island pick ... discovering Cream and Hendrix were huge ...
My uncle letting me drive a car for the first time at 14 on the way to Weymouth from New Tusket in Nova Scotia ... I have always loved driving .. the car being the greatest invention of the 20th Century in my opinion .. the greatest freedom machine ever made and like the wagon train beforehand it and what it did for western expansion .. the automobile literally created 20th century USA ... my favorite car .. Jaguar XKE ...
Television .. massively good thing... specifically .. The Man From U.N.C.L.E. ... Get Smart ... Ed Sullivan ... Star Trek ... The Beverly Hillbillies ... Walt Disney .. The Avengers ... Mission Impossible ... The Prisoner ... best TV show .. The Prisoner ... followed by The Man From U.N.C.L.E ...
Graduating high school/starting university ... putting the first 20 years behind me was a big load off ... good riddance to a load of shit I didn't understand ... I wasn't out of the woods yet ... but ... we are not there yet in this story ...
