Refreshing Memory

Of course with Xmas Day came the big meal .. turkey and all the fixings. My mother is a great cook ... let there be no doubt of that. I would say her specialty would be dessert and homemade apple pie would probably be on top of that list. She loves sweets herself after a meal so there was always dessert in the house.

It must have chagrined her to no end that I was the fussiest of eaters. My diet was extremely narrow ... consisting mainly of canned spaghetti ... kraft dinner .. hot dogs ... grilled cheese sandwiches ... canned fruit ... cake or pie ... you stray outside that and I probably ate all around it ... I remember reading that children with the same behaviour patterns I had are 5 times more likely to be fussy eaters and restrict themselves to known favourites.

Speaking of favourites ... my favourite meal was homemade baked beans .. with hashed potatoes ... hot dogs and freshly made buns and bread ... and I still make my own version of this meal to this day ... the fussy eating would stay with me ... of course enables by my mother who probably gave up trying new things .. until University .. I boarded the first two years and took all my dinner meal across the street at Mrs. Beggs ... after not eating for 2 or 3 days ... it's amazing what you learn to like ... and of course it was all good ... and now I will eat anything ...

Mrs. Beggs was a large woman .. and I mean very large .. but she had a daughter that used to hang around close to the kitchen when we all eating .. there was about 10 of us .. all young boys between the ages of 19 to 22 ... she wore cut off white denims .. and some flimsy t-shirt ... she was a stunner .. I often wonder if she ever married anyone that came to dinner ...

When I think back on our Xmas meals I can't remember a single one .. I am assuming that that was because there was no 'at the table strife' .. no 300 yard stares ... or bickering ... besides  ... it was Xmas and I would not have let anything ruin it ...

There are pictures I have somewhere that show the Xmas dinner table and some of us around the table .. meaning whoever took the picture obviously wasn't in it ... after I am finished with this blog, I will dig them out and have a look ... right now I would rather keep the memory that I have versus the hard reality of a reminder that ... just maybe ... Xmas wasn't the magical time I always think of it as being ...
