Singled Out

I was sent to Ontario with another engineer at the beginning of November 1974 to get operating experience and would stay there until early March 1975. I was attached to the process control group and responsibility for me was given to LVW ... LVW and I have been very good friends ever since and have shared some great travel adventures .. and hopefully there are a few more left in us.. we did Route 66 together about 30 years or so ago now ... one of the world's truly great road trips ... I also met JS there .. and I was to make his acquaintance again in 1987 when I ended up working in Toronto ... one of the smartest people I know ..

On the weekends for the first little while .. I would travel to Toronto and spend the weekend with my cousin who shared an apartment with a friend at Yonge & Davisville ... I would show up with a 24 of beer .. and then we would hit the roads .. parties .. restaurants .. visit his friends ... I was like the country hick learning the ins and outs of the big city ... one night we went to Old Angelo's on Elm Street .. we didn't have a reservation .. my cousin just scanned the reservation list .. oh we are so and so .. we ate and never got thrown out .. my cousin was a force of nature like 'The Beast' ...

After Xmas .. because of snow ..  I travelled to Toronto less and less ... and would simply chum with LVW and put in the time listening to music, drinking and carrying on. We had another friend PW .. we moved him one night .. another drunken affair in winter where we drove the rental vehicle right off the road into a culvert ... PW had a very unique sense of humour and phrasing that I absolutely was fascinated with ... whenever PW is in Ontario we all get together and retell the same old stories .. same as it ever was ...

I returned to my work place on the 10 March 1975 ... (the other engineer had returned a week or two before me) ... the Technical Manager took me around the operations offices to introduce me to the new hires since I had been gone .. when we got to the central typing pool .. he introduced me to the collective pool ... one more senior typing pool member piped up and said ... Phil is the only single man in the operations department ... there was a young woman at her desk .. obviously they had been discussing something .. the young woman's name was Yvonne Cameron ...
