The Peanut Gallery

It didn't take too long after meeting BD that we became constant companions ... she would come over the apartment to study .. we would go the library together to do homework ... I would visit her where she was staying with relatives ... she was intelligent and had a great sense of humour .. and loved to laugh ... I don't remember much about that first Xmas break .. but I assume I spent a fair amount of time at her home .. taxiing back and forth as neither one of us had a car ...

I don't remember when my mother first asked for more information on BD but I do remember the conversation .. she asked about her mother and father .. especially the maiden name of the mother .. and my mother then made the comment that she was related to family the she considered had low breeding and a bad background ... so .. she didn't approve obviously ...

So here's my mother .. from a place in Nova Scotia ... that is simply a signpost on a road .. went to school in a one room schoolhouse ... throwing shade on somebody that I was beginning to care for very much ... not because of who she was or what she was doing or had accomplished .. but because of the luck of the draw being born to parents she considered the lowest of the low ... what a bunch of crap ... but there was another issue .. remember my father's so called 'sister? .. BD had the same first name ... that never even dawned on me until much later .. but I am sure my mother was well aware ...

This segue's neatly in another incident regarding my mother ... this was probably summer 1972 .. by now BD and I were a serious item ... there was some kind of gathering at my parent's house .. it might had had something to do with my sister .. I think my mother's sister was there ... or she may have entered this story just a bit later ... my mother went to introduce BD to someone and forget her name ... BD was mortified and had a couple of stiff drinks .. and for someone who didn't drink it immediately went to her head .. I got her out of there and into my bedroom and then sent her home via taxi .. with sincerest apologies for what had happened ... while we were in the bedroom she had a couple of peanuts that she dropped in the soundhole of my guitar .. the skin came off one and stuck to one of the braces .. 30 years later I could look in the soundhole and that peanut skin stuck to the brace ... a constant reminder of that get together ...

My mother's sister brought up how my girlfriend had gotten drunk and that here behaviour was below the position of a young lady and a possible future wife ... more horseshit ...

I have never forgiven my mother for her treatment of BD .. or this particular incident .. but it didn't end here .. how could it ... there is more pain and anguish just around the corner ...
